Summary

User surveys are a valuable method for UX researchers to gather information and insights from end-users about their experiences, needs, and preferences. By asking targeted questions and analyzing the responses, researchers can better understand their target audience and make informed design decisions. Surveys can be conducted through a variety of channels, including online, in-person, or over the phone, and can take many different forms, such as multiple-choice questions, open-ended responses, or Likert scales. The information gathered from user surveys can be used to inform the design process, evaluate the success of a design solution, or simply gather feedback on a particular product or service.

Data Gathered in User Surveys
  • Demographic surveys: I may analyze the user demographics (age, gender, location, etc.).
  • Attitude surveys: I may analyze user attitudes towards a product or service.
  • Usability surveys: I may measure and analyze user satisfaction with the usability of a product or service.
  • Preference surveys: I may measure and analyze user preferences for specific features or functions.
Case Study: Charles Schwab

Often in the beginning stages of study planning, I hold a research intake meeting where I invite designers, product owners, and other key stakeholders to brainstorm and understand what it is we want to learn

After determining a survey is best suited for the research objectives, I determine the number of participants, and the schedule for the study. I then find and recruit a representative sample of participants for the study, taking into consideration factors such as demographics, level of affluence, and type of investor.

I develop high-quality, precise questions to address my team’s research objectives. Typically I’ve run studies through UserZoom, and I am able to conduct thorough and insightful research that will yield the valuable data we need.

I take on the responsibility of monitoring the results of the survey. As part of my data collection process, I am meticulous capturing quantitative data about the participants’ preferences, including how important it is to have certain features. Once the study is completed, I clean and organize the data. Then, I conduct a deep and extensive analysis of the data, carefully examining the results to draw valuable conclusions and identify actionable insights. My extensive experience in this field has taught me how to identify the most significant patterns and trends, and use them to develop strategies that can have a measurable impact on the user experience

I communicate the results and recommendations of the study in a clear and concise manner to all stakeholders, providing data visualizations such as graphs to support the findings. Typically, my recommendations are addressing a specific business objective while also improving user experience. I then work with the development team to implement any recommendations arising from the study to improve the user experience of the product.
